Linear vs undulating periodization — which actually works better?

Linear adds weight session by session. Undulating varies rep ranges within the week. Both work — for different people.

Linear progression

Add weight every session at the same rep range. Works brilliantly for beginners. Stops working at intermediate level.

Daily undulating periodization (DUP)

Vary rep ranges across the week — 5s on Monday, 8s on Wednesday, 12s on Friday. Better for intermediate and advanced lifters.

What the research shows

Research supports both linear and undulating periodization as workable ways to organize resistance training. Results depend on training status, total work, exercise selection and study design; there is no reliable universal percentage advantage that applies to every lifter.

How AJYX chooses

Beginners get linear. Intermediates auto-shift to DUP. Advanced lifters get block periodization with DUP within blocks.
